Green Gets First Win
Barnham Broom hosted the fifth event of the Golf Days UK Norfolk Tour 2015 on Friday 29th May and with very unseasonable weather, the Hill Course was set to be a very tough test for the competitors. The opening stretch of holes proved to be the toughest on the tour so far with many players struggling to play to their handicaps through the first five.
Early leader was Royal Norwich member, Brian Belshaw who made a birdie on the 220 yard par 3 second hole and along with Fakenham member Neil Featherstone were the only players to show in red numbers early on.
As players battled with heavy downpours and strong winds, some took advantage of the less demanding holes and started to make their way up the leaderboard and after nine holes it was Nick Barrett who led the field on +1. A strong start to the back nine ensured Barrett kept his position at the top and with one hole to play he held a two point lead over playing partner Dylan Green.
Barrett pulled his tee shot left off the tee and could only advance the ball towards the putting surface. Green knew that he would need to make a birdie to have any chance of the win and with Barrett in trouble he duly played a superb approach and then made the putt. Barrett could only manage a bogey five and the two players were tied on +1.
The countback system was used to determine the winner and with 12 points on the ‘back 6’ Green secured his first win of the season.
Third place went to Neil Featherstone who finished on +3. The nearest the pin competitions were won by Dylan Green and Nick Flett.
After five events, Nigel Reed still heads the Order of Merit by 12 points from 2014 Champion, Jay Penfold. You can view the latest OoM leaderboard by clicking here
