Hacon Secures First Win On The Norfolk Tour
Event six on the Golf Days UK Norfolk Tour was played on a sunny June afternoon at Bawburgh Golf Club which was looking superb. Conditions were set for some good scores with many players aiming to improve on their previous performances and climb the overall leaderboard.
The event was played using GDScore allowing players to view the leaderboard live on the course. There were some strong starts with a few players scoring in the red including Bawburgh member Justin Fordham, Caister member Thaine Hacon, last year’s champion James Hart and the tour leader Iain Yule.
Some exciting changes followed through the back 9, most notably an eagle at the par 5, 13th hole by Iain Yule saw him jump into the lead at 4 under nett and gave him a two shot lead over the chasing field. The tough finish at Bawburgh caused a few players problems though and there ended up being only two players under par to their handicap after 18 holes.
Justin Fordham and Thaine Hacon finished on 37 points with Thaine taking the top spot in countback with 18 points on the back 9. Thaine was delighted to take his first title on the tour and this puts him poised to leap towards the top of the order of merit table upon completion of his fifth round. For Justin this was his fifth he now sits at the top of the order of merit leaderboard with 467 points.
Iain Yule took third place on the day and improved his overall points but now drops to second on 448 points. Brian Belshaw moves to third spot on 436 points and last year’s order of merit winner Adam Saunders moves into fourth on 428 points.
The nearest the pin competitions at Bawburgh were claimed by Roger Wood and Bruce McQuade for excellent approach shot to the par 3, 4th and 16th holes. Bruce was the closest nearest the pin we have had on the tour this year and we almost saw the first tour hole in one!
The next event on the Norfolk Tour is the second major of the year at Royal Cromer Golf Club on 18th July.
