McQuade shoots level par to take the Costessey event in style
The sixth event of the Golf Days UK Norfolk Tour was played on a glorious June afternoon at Costessey Park. The course was in superb condition and it was a great opportunity for players to put a good score together. With Gamebook live scoring in operation players could keep track of their position throughout the event.
It was a tightly fought contest throughout and at half way several players were under par to their handicap including 2011 tour champion Randy Reynolds who got to 5 under. With three birdies in a row Nick Barrett made a charge on the back nine but along with Randy dropped a few shots in the closing holes to finish with 35 points. Costessey Park member Warren Blackwell drove the 18th and holed the putt for an eagle 2 to also finish with 35 points and took third spot on countback. Paul Yardy with a strong finish carded 36 points to take second place but no one could catch Bruce McQuade who scored 38 points off his handicap of 2. Bruce follows up his second place in the Eaton major with a win making a storming start to the tour.
There were also two nearest the pins to complete for. Costessey Park member Matthew Powley hit a stunning approach to the first to finish only a few inches from the cup and take the opening nearest the pin. The 14th was almost won by Matthew again but Randy Reynolds managed an even better tee shot to win the second one.
With the best five rounds counting on the order of merit leaderboard, a few players have leapt up into the top ten including Jon Batten and Iain Yule reaching 4th and 5th places respectively. The top three remains unchanged with Adam Saunders leading on 491 points, followed by Steve Greatrex on 475 and Cain Esherwood on 459.
