Kim Claims First Win
Crowborough Beacon Golf Club hosted the fifth event of the Golf Days UK Surrey/Sussex Tour on Monday 8th June 2015. A glorious day welcomed the players and with the course playing tough, the players were set to battle it out for all important Order of Merit point and great prizes from Nike Golf and tour sponsor, Loudmouth.
Setting the pace early was Paul Knowles who made a birdie at the opening hole and Stephen Legg who again found himself under par to his handicap through the first few hole. Also putting together a good round was Alex Welton who was hovering around even par for most of the round. Newcomers, Huw Evans and Calantha Newby were also featuring in the top spots of the leaderboard.
Through nine holes, most players were over par to their handicaps and it was going to take something special to climb the leaderboard to secure victory. Tour regular, Nam Jun Kim was the man to do this and played the back nine of his life to jump from +7 through nine to finish the day on even par (36 points). Kim was in the second group out, so he had set the clubhouse lead and with a handful of players only able to catch him it was a waiting game to see if he could hold onto his first win.
The only likely contender was Alex Welton who needed to par the tough 18th to tie Kim. Sadly for Welton, he couldn’t find the par and finished his round on +3 to leave Kim with his first win. Two other players finished on +3 – Huw Evans and Graham Miles. The countback system was used to establish the placings and with Evans having the best back nine, he took the runner up spot and Miles the third place positon.
Nearest the the pin winners were Nam Jun Kim on the 6th and Alex Welton on the 13th.
After five events, Tony Curtis now heads the Order of Merit by one point from long time leader, Julian Brand. However with a pack of chasing players and many not having yet played five events, we do expect to see many changes throughout the final five events.
