Copas Takes the Second Major
The final major on the Golf Days UK Surrey Tour took place at Gatton Manor as players looked to boost their position in the overall leaderboard. With the top fifteen qualifying for the grand final at Kingswood, players knew this was an event not to miss with 125 order of merit points on offer for the winner.
Despite the wet start, the rain held off for the rest of the day and players enjoyed the course which was in excellent condition. Bertie Chambers playing in his 4th event held the lead early on with his final score of 35 points off his ¾ handicap of 2. Graham Taylor managed to better that with 36 points off his ¾ handicap of 5 but took second spot in the end. It was John Copas playing in his 3rd event who took the major title with his score of 38 points off an 8 handicap on the day. The nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Tony Brehme and Duncan Mackie. Now with only two events left it couldn’t be much tighter in the overall leaderboard. With 519 points DaveSclater is in first position and on course to claim the set of custom fit irons provided by Chris Potter Golf. In second place is Kevin Thomas with 518 points and in third Kevin Wellings with 512 points. There are still a couple of players to complete their 5 rounds including Bertie Chambers who will also jump to 519 points if he can win his next event.
