Sayer Secures Opening Event
The first event of the Golf Days UK Norfolk Tour was hosted by Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf on Friday 19th February. Brilliant winter sunshine greeted the players and with a slight breeze blowing, conditions were set to be good for the season opener.
Armed with GDScore Live Golf Scoring – which enables players to see how they stand in the field at any point on the course – the first groups took to the course to do battle for top quality prizes from official tour supplier, Nike Golf and all important Order of Merit points.
Through the early stages of the round, many people topped the leaderboard as they made good starts to the round over the opening holes. Players to note here were James Colclough who was the only player to make a birdie at the first hole.
As the round progressed, it was Phil Sayer (Newmarket Golf Club) led the way, closely followed by Great Yarmouth and Caister member Tim Barber. Sayer made a net eagle at the par 3 7th to make the turn at level par to his handicap, but the back nine was where Sayer took hold of the event by scoring 21 points over the closing nine holes.
With his score of -3 sitting at the top of the leaderboard, Sayer could sit back and watch the other players try to catch him on the live leaderboard in the clubhouse. Early contender Tim Barber struggled over the back nine and a string of double bogeys ended his chances of victory. 2015 Norfolk Tour Order of Merit Runner Up, Dylan Green was making progress through the field and after making an excellent eagle at the par 5 15th to move to within one shot of the lead, he looked the only danger to take the spoils from Sayer.
Bogeys at 16 and 17 meant Green’s challenge faded and despite a birdie at the 18th, he could only post a score of 37 points to secure second spot on the day. Third place went to Andy Risebro who returned a score of 36 points. The nearest the pin competitions were won by Paul Took and Paul Adams.
Alongside collecting 100 Order of Merit points for his win, Sayer has the choice of over 50 items from Nike Golf from the brand new prize brochure. He also receives a £75 voucher from tour sponsor, Loudmouth Golf.
