Lakhani leads the charge at Hoebridge
The ninth event of the Golf Days UK Surrey Tour saw players competing at Hoebridge golf club with everyone aiming to improve their position in The Race to Stoke Park. Kevin Thomas knew he needed a good finish to challenge Dave Sclater at the top of the leaderboard and a few players were hoping to secure their spot in the top fifteen for the final at Kingswood in November.
It was Kamal Lakhani, a regular on the Essex Tour who took the Hoebridge title in the end with 37 points off his ¾ handicap of 7. Second place was Dave Sclater who did enough to extend his lead by 2 further points over Kevin Thomas who failed to improve in the end. Third place was taken by newcomer Jamie Merrington with his score of 35 points off his ¾ handicap of 12.
There were a couple of other new players making an appearance including Matthew Smedley who managed a great shot into the 6th, hitting the flag and leaving him just 6 feet for a birdie. But even this wasn’t quite enough for the nearest the pin award with Kamal Lakhani ending up inside it for another prize. Jamie Merrington added to his bright start to the tour by winning the other nearest the pin on the 12th hole.
With just one event left next month at Rusper it looks like one of three players are going to win the order of merit and claim the custom fit set of irons. Dave Sclater is the current leader but can only improve further if he wins the last event as he has 522 points with 95 points as his lowest score. Kevin Thomas has 519 points but with an 87 as his lowest he needs to finish fourth to equal Dave Sclater. Kevin Wellings has 512 points with an 89 as his lowest so requires a win at Rusper to snatch the title. Even those that can’t win the custom fit irons can still become Surrey Tour Champion. Anyone that has played 5 events and makes the top fifteen in the order of merit leaderboard will be off to Kingswood for the final for the shoot out and the chance to win a trip to the world famous, Stoke Park.
