Tony Produces Tiger Like Finish!
Kingswood Golf and Country Club was the host to the Golf Days UK Surrey Tour 2013 Grand Final on 8th November 2013. The top fourteen from the Order of Merit all turned out to compete to be crowned Surrey Tour Champion 2013 and bag a break to the luxurious Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire.
The finalists went out in leaderboard order and armed with live scoring and exciting day was in prospect and it did not disappoint! At the half way stage, it was Graham Taylor who led the field with an excellent -3 to his ¾ handicap of 5. Taylor was on fire and kept pushing further ahead and through sixteen holes was showing an impressive -7 to be a comfortable 3 shots clear of the field from Tony Brehme and Bertie Chambers.
Brehme was playing in the group behind Taylor and produced a magical finish that any golfer would be proud of. The tough par 4 16th saw Brehme fire in a birdie to get to -6 and be within touching distance of long time leader Taylor. The par 3 17th saw Taylor take an unlikely bogey and drop back to -6 and with a par down the last, the clubhouse score was set and all was in Brehme’s hands as he stood on the 18th tee. Due to the live scoring system, Brehme knew that a five would tie the lead with Taylor and force a playoff, but an excellent approach into the green left him with two putts for the win and in true champion style, he didn’t need the two putts and sank his twelve foot putt to make it two birdies in the last three holes and posted a -8 score off his 3/4 handicap of 10. Brehme, paid tribute to his late father who urged him to take up the sport and this has been his finest moment on the golf course and a well deserved win.
Commiserations must go to Graham Taylor for posting an amazing gross one under par round and on any other day would have been good enough to win the event if it was not for the magical display from Brehme.
