Back to back wins for Thomas in the first major of the season
The first major of 2013 on the Surrey Tour proved to live up to expectation as a fantastic battle commenced. Pyrford Golf Club was the host of the June competition and truly was a major venue. With quick greens, tight fairways and several risk reward holes with water hazards a plenty, the course was enjoyed by all. Being a major there were more order of merit points on offer and GameBook live scoring was introduced to track the action for all on the course.
Several players started strongly and fought out the front nine with six players under par> Kamal Lakhani and Graham Miles led at the turn, both 4 under to their handicaps. Lakhani couldn’t hold on and dropped several shots coming back in but Miles maintained a steady back nine and was 2 under gross after 14 holes. Tour regular Dave Sclater out in the first group, was also going well and picked up a few net birdies on the way in. Despite dropping a shot on the last he finished with 40 points and was early leader in the clubhouse on 40 points, 4 under his 3/4 handicap of 12. Knowing what they needed to do on the course several players finished strongly and Graham Miles managed to hold on and by paring the final 4 holes he finished on 41 points off his 3/4 handicap of 5. Kevin Thomas also playing off 5 was steadily climbing the leaderboard through the back 9 and by paring the final 6 holes finished on 41 points as well.
Third place went to Dave Sclater, second with 19 points on the back nine was awarded to Graham Miles and the winner with 20 points on the back nine was Kevin Thomas. This is Kevin’s second win on the tour and was delighted to receive a pair of adidas shoes, 125 order of merit points and a bonus £150 to spend on Loudmouth clothing for winning wearing his Loudmouth trousers, received from the previous event. The full results of the day can be viewed here. There were two nearest the pin competitions on the day and these were won by Kamal Lakhani and Dave Sclater.
After 5 events on the tour Kevin Wellings maintains the top spot on 486 merit points, closely followed by Dave Sclater on 479 points. Both Kevin and Dave have played in all of the events so they will now be looking to improve on their worst score as the other players aim to get their five rounds in.
