Record Round for Batten makes him King at Royal Cromer
The seventh event on the Norfolk Tour and the second Major of the season took place at the fantastic Royal Cromer Golf Club. As players were arriving and gathering around the tee, many members at Royal Cromer were passing comments alluding to the tough test that was to come. The deep rough in particular was costing players dearly and after a few holes, several of the tour members were in complete agreement.
There were, however a few exceptions and none more so than Royal Cromer member Jon Batten. Sporting his Loudmouth Cow trousers won from a previous year on the Norfolk Tour he dominated the day with his personal best round, scoring 42 points with his 3 under gross round. This included birdies on the 3rd, 8th, 9th and 11th holes. As a major champion, Jon gets to choose a prize from Nike Golf worth up to £160 as well as another item of Loudmouth clothing of his choice.
The only other player managing to finish in red numbers was Andy Riseboro who finished on 38 points off his ¾ handicap of 8. Andy takes the second prize worth up to £130 of Nike gear but takes the top order of merit prize of 100 points as Jon is not a tour member. In third spot was Justin Fordham on 36 points who finished strongly with a gross 1 under par back 9 to take the prize on countback from Joshy Ring.
As several players completed their 5th round on the tour the overall Order of Merit Leaderboard has now changed with Josh Weeds topping the table on 468 points, 14 ahead of previous leader Chris Ingram. In the second half leaderboard Bruce McQuade continues to lead the way with another good round at Royal Cromer following his win last month at home course Royal Norwich.
With 3 rounds to go, players are aiming to finish in the top 10 on the overall leaderboard to qualify for the grand final, or finish in the top 4 on the second half leaderboard. The third way to qualify is through the wildcard place. After the 10th event any player with a nearest the pin win, who has completed 5 rounds can also qualify by winning a 100 yard shoot out. Nearest the pin winners at Royal Cromer were Richard Bunn on the 13th hole and Bruce McQuade on the 17th.
