Saunders slides into second place as he takes the 8th event at Dunston
De Vere Dunston Hall hosted the latest event in the Golf Days UK Race to Turnberry as players battled to improve their position in the overall leader-board. After scoring 40 points last month Dean Ashton had given himself a substantial lead in the tour but as he was unable to play it was left to the chasing pack to make some ground. Up stepped Adam Saunders a regular of the tour who had consistently scored well but needed something special to make a charge. He needed 32 or more to improve his best 5 total, so was delighted with his 39 points to put him into second spot and within 7 of Ashton. Former tour leader Cain Esherwood carded another 31 points, his third in a row, keeping him in third place on the tour.
As the winner of the event Adam chose a Cobra Wedge as his prize from the selection of prizes sponsored by Chris Potter Golf. Second place on the day went to Tony Belmonte with 38 points boosting his best 5 scores by 12 points and moving him into 9th position on the tour. There was a three way tie for third with Nick Flett, Jason Fields and Richard Lawton all shooting scores of 35 points. Nick took the prize with his back nine score of 18 points, just a point more than Richard. Nearest the Pin was played on the 169 yard 9th hole where several excellent tee shots were played but Cain Esherwood ended up the closest to the hole. The longest drive hole was played on the Par 5, 15th hole where Kevin Goude hit the longest drive of the tour so far with his monster measuring 330 yards.
After the last event the tour seemed securely wrapped up for Ashton with his 11 point lead at the top and a trip to Turnberry Resort was heading his way. Now with the lead cut to 7 and Adam at his home club next month it could go down to the final to be decided. What is for sure is the second place is wide open as players compete for the set of custom fit irons. The current top five is as follows: Dean Ashton (177), Adam Saunders (170), Cain Esherwood (166), Nick Barrett (165), and Kevin Goude (161).
