Miller makes an impressive debut and Lakhani takes the lead in the tour
The second event in the Golf Days UK Essex Tour – The Race to Celtic Manor took place at the South Essex Golf Club on a misty March morning. The 40 strong field of players were delayed getting started because thick fog had descended over the course but after half an hour the rain cleared the way. Despite the weather some excellent scoring took place and the competition for merit points was fierce. In their first Golf Days UK event both Chris Foster and Dean Earle scored well and returned 36 points each. It was count back that separated them and with 19 points on the back nine Chris Foster took the third prize and 92 merit points.
After finishing strongly in last year’s tour and taking the runner up spot Kamal Lakhani was back again to make his mark on the 2013 tour. After an eighth place finish on the first event Kamal came out determined to improve. 39 points certainly looked good enough to take the South Essex Event until newcomer Stuart Miller playing off his ¾ handicap of 12 strolled into the clubhouse with 41 points on his card. Stuart chose a Cobra stand bag for his first prize. He also received £75 worth of Loudmouth clothing and claimed 100 order of merit points. Kamal chose a dozen TaylorMade balls for his second place finish but has moved into first place on the overall leaderboard after receiving a further 95 merit points. There were two nearest the pin prizes also on offer and these were won by Justin Teece and Jason Skelton.
After two events Kamal Lakhani leads the tour with 181 points but closely followed by Mick Thompson and Rob Kemp on 174 points and then David Alchorne on 172. The 15 players with the best five order of merit scores at the end of the season will make the final and play for the chance to win a trip to Celtic Manor Resort, Wales.
