Scott wins the Order of Merit in Dramatic Style
After ten events on the Golf Days UK Essex Tour in the end it came down to just 1 point that decided the Order of Merit Winner. In difficult condition at Woolston Manor there were three players battling it out to take the top spot from Dave Parry. Stuart Miller playing in his fifth event had to win the event, Glen Maguire needed to finish in the top three and Ben Scott had to finish in the top four.
Miller and Maguire had storming starts and with live scoring being used the tension was building as through 9 holes Miller was 3 under to his handicap and Maguire was 4 under. However Maguire had a disastrous start to the back nine and dropped back to +2 over the next three holes. Miller dropped back over the back nine but maintained the lead until the closing few holes. In the end Miller could only manage third spot with a round of 33 points off his handicap of 11. Maguire finished sixth with 29 points off 9 and could not catch Parry.
It was down to Ben Scott who was tied fourth going into the final hole knowing he had to finish well to take the title. However a six on the par 4 last dropped him to fifth and it looked as though there would be a tie with Parry. The 18th hole into the wind and over water, caused problems for everyone and the leading players also dropped shots allowing Scott to finish tied fourth. This was enough to take the Order of Merit title and win a set of custom fit irons supplied by Chris Potter Golf.
The winner on the day was newcomer Sam Johnson who took the Woolston event with an impressive 34 points off his handicap of 5 on the day. It had to go to countback though as Luke Mabbott also finished with 34 but could only manage 16 on the back nine compared to Johnson’s 18. Johnson chose a Cleveland putter as his prize and also receives a Loudmouth Golf voucher for £75 worth of clothing of his choice. The two nearest the Pins on the day were won by Stuart Miller and Ben Scott.
